HOW RADIANT INFRARED HEAT
WORKS
The sun is an example of an infrared heater. It radiates
infrared heat waves through space until these rays strike an object, such as
planet Earth. The Earth is warmed by the sun's infrared waves. The warmed Earth
then gives off heat to heat the air.
Using this same infrared heating principle, we take
infrared energy from a man-made heating element, control it with a reflector as
light is controlled, and project it to the subject to be heated (animals, birds,
people, or objects). This infrared energy is identical to the sun's energy but
without the UV tanning rays. It does no heating until it is absorbed by the
subject underneath the heater. The heated subject then gives off some heat to
help heat the surrounding air.
BENEFITS
Save Energy!
Why heat the entire building when all you want to do is
provide warmth for the animals/birds that are confined in one space. Downgoing
infrared rays heat animals, birds, people, objects - not the air around
them.
Save Time & Labor!
Kalglo heaters come complete ready to use, similar to a
"shop light". No expensive plumbing and installation costs or necessary routine
maintenance as with gas heaters.
Save Animals!
Animals love Kalglo heaters for their large heat patterns
and lower intensity heat - not focused in one small spot as with heat lamps. Baby
animals/chicks will not bunch or pile on top of each other. New born animals
usually have no problem finding the warmth under the Kalglo heater. They remain
warm, dry and comfortable for better health and faster weight gain.
Safe, Clean Heat!
Kalglo heaters have durable metal sheath heating elements,
similar to the elements in an electric oven. No glass tubes or lamps to break and
no open flame. Minimal fire hazard! They do not remove oxygen from or put
moisture into the air as gas heaters do. They emit no UV (ultra-violet)
light.
UNDERSTANDING THE VARIOUS MODEL
DIFFERENCES

HS Models
Such as HS-2420 do not have a switch or built-in control.
When plugged into a receptacle the heater will come on full and stay on full
until unplugged or turned off. The heater can be turned on/off by a circuit
breaker, a switch controlling the receptacle, or by a separate thermostat
(optional). HS models can be regulated manually by wall mounted
electro-mechanical power regulators (duty cycler) such as PR-2436RS, or by
electronic dimmer controls such as LC-2440. They can also be regulated
automatically by the Energy-Miser temperature control such as the
TCE-2484.

HS-RS Models
Such as HS-2420RS have a built-in manual electro-mechanical
power regulator on one end of the heater. It controls the power to the heater by
cycling it on and off, so the heater output is a set percentage of its wattage
rating. The control has an off position, a HI position for 100% output (on full),
and variable number settings from LO to 6 allowing for approximately 23% to 70%
output. It is referred to as a manual control because whatever the setting the
user has chosen, the heater output will continue at that setting (similar to the
heating element controls on an electric range). It is not a thermostat so changes
in air temperature have no affect on the output. The heater will not shut off by
itself unless it is controlled by a separate thermostat (optional).

MRM Models
Such as MRM-2420 have a built-in manual solid-state control
on one end of the heater. It controls the heater the same as a dimmer controls a
light bulb. MRM models provide a fuller and smoother range of control than the
HS-RS models. The output ranges from 0 to 100% and is continuous - not cycled on
and off as with the RS control described in the preceding paragraph. The heater
will not shut off by itself unless it is controlled by a separate thermostat
(optional).

MR Models
Such as MR-2420 have a built-in solid-state automatic
temperature sensing control on one end of the heater. The temperature sensor is
on the end of a 6 ft. cord attached to the control. The sensor is suspended below
the heater and near the subject to feel what the subject feels. NOTE: MR models
are not to be used where sensors can be chewed off
unless the sensor is protected by an expanded metal guard. The control dial on
the end of the heater is labeled from L (40 deg. F) to H (100 deg. F) with each
line in between representing a 6 degree increment. The set temperature is
maintained at the sensor level to within +/- 1/2 degree.
GENERAL INFORMATION *
FEATURES * SPECIFICATIONS
All Kalglo electric radiant infrared heaters have durable
metal sheath heating elements. The heating elements carry a 5 year limited
warranty against premature burnout and are field replaceable. The heaters come
complete with a 7 ft. double insulated cord set with molded grounded plug, 13 ft.
of hanging sash chain (to be cut in half for up to 6 1/2 ft. suspension), and
hanging hardware consisting of woodscrew hooks and "S" hooks. Close the "S" hooks
with pliers for secure hanging. The heaters are typically hung much like a
fluorescent light fixture, although wall mounting is possible when an adjustable
mounting bracket kit, model AMB-1, is used.
Kalglo heaters are all aluminum so they will not rust when
used in high moisture areas. Incidental splashing will not hurt the heaters - it
would be similar to a pot boiling over on an electric range. Most Kalglo heaters
are intended to be used indoors for utility type purposes. They are most
efficient when facing down (not angled to one side) in draft free environments.
Windows and exterior doors should be kept closed whenever possible. Optimum
distance between heater and subject usually ranges from 2 to 4 ft. All heaters
are 5 1/2 in. wide and 5 1/2 in. high and operate on single phase voltage. 240
volt heaters have a NEMA 6-15 plug.
Protective guard grills are usually not needed but are
available as an option. Heavy duty chrome plated steel guards easily snap into
the heater. One grill for 35 in. models, two grills for 65 in. models. Guard
grill is model PGG-30. Order guard grills separately.

TEMPERATURE RISE DIRECTLY
BELOW HEATING ELEMENT AND HEAT PATTERNS AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS
Note: The added infrared will not increase air temperature
by the stated amounts, but it will produce the approximate equivalent comfort
level directly below the heater (not the entire heat pattern) as if the air
temperature were increased by those amounts. The objective is to project infrared
heat directly to the subject in order to replace heat from the body as fast as it
is lost.
